Protecting Yourself From Mosquitos

Here are some easy tips to help protect yourself from mosquitos:

  1. Reduce stagnant water in your yard, also make sure all windows and doors have screens, and that all screens are in good repair.

  2. Wear shoes, socks, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt when outdoors for long periods of time, or when mosquitoes are most active.

  3. Consider the use of mosquito repellent, and the use of a mosquito fogger. Many of the mosquitoes that carry the West Nile virus are especially likely to bite around dusk and dawn. If you are outdoors around these times of the day, it is important to apply repellent. In many parts of the country, there are mosquitoes that also bite during the day, and these mosquitoes have also been found to carry the West Nile virus. The safest decision is to apply repellent whenever you are outdoors.

  4. Avoid thick brush, and overgrown areas were mosquito thrive.

  5. Avoid touching any dead birds that you find. Contact Animal Control at: West Lafayette 775-5200 / Tippecanoe County 423-9321.
