Red Cross COVID19 Response

The American Red Cross is working diligently to replace canceled blood drives throughout the state.  The American Red Cross supplies 40% of the blood supply to the nation.  Red blood cells are only good for 42 days and platelets must be used within five days.  We have seen 5,000 blood drives canceled nationally leaving the product supply down 175,000.  Our wonderful team of volunteers and partners are trying to make up these numbers as our lifesaving mission continues for those who require blood transfusions, such as accident victims, traumatic surgery patients, and those fighting cancer.

Other services and readiness.  The Red Cross is also working hard to train our Mass Care responders on new safety protocol if an emergency shelter must be activated.  Unfortunately, Indiana is also moving into tornado and flood season.  In addition, we are partnering with the Indiana Family and Social Service Administration to provide Psychological First Aide training to Hoosier health care and social services professionals.  Disaster volunteers responding to fire calls are equipped with additional hygiene supplies and encouraged to provide services and financial support to clients remotely when available.  The Red Cross has provided $720,000 to the global Red Cross and Red Crescent along with communications and data expertise support.

We are in serious need of volunteers and partners during this time of need, especially for blood collection.

I hope you and your families are healthy and safe.
