West Lafayette is a great place not only to raise a family, retire and earn an education, but also to do business. The city has worked hard for several years to create a dynamic business-friendly environment by:

  • Partnering with Purdue University, Purdue Research Foundation and community economic development stakeholders
  • Proactively marketing West Lafayette
  • Creating a roadmap for progress via citizen-driven strategic planning since 1986
  • Investing in economic development through the use of tax increment finance (TIF) funds, grants and other available resources

The head of the Department of Development, Erik Carlson, oversees the city's strategic planning; economic and business development, retention and expansion programs, including administering tax abatements for the Economic Development Commission; and 3 TIF districts for the Redevelopment Commission.

The department also administers federal funds received from the Community Development Block Grant Program. These grants from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development stimulate economic growth by partially funding housing rehabilitation and programs to maintain and upgrade neighborhoods. They also allow the city to expand economic opportunities for low and moderate income people.

Street Department

The Street, Sanitation and Recycling Department is responsible for collecting garbage, recyclables, and yard waste (for residents within the city limits) from all properties of 4 units or less within the West Lafayette sewer district.

We are also responsible for snow removal, street maintenance, maintaining traffic signs and signals and maintaining sewers and storm drains.

Overseen by the Street Commissioner, the Street, Sanitation and Recycling Department is located at 705 South River Road.  Our staff can be contacted by telephone at if you have any questions, concerns or comments including reporting snow and ice conditions, missing traffic signs and residential road repairs.

The Street Department needs your help! There are several areas throughout the city with low-hanging branches that make it difficult for the garbage trucks, recycling trucks, street sweepers and school buses to get close to the curb. We are asking residents to take a look at their street trees and consider whether they need to prune off the lowest branches. Branches should be no less than 8 feet above sidewalks and 15 feet above streets. Need help or advice? We are here to help! Contact the Department of Development by phone or online here: Contact the Department of Development or 775-5160.

Thanks for your help in keeping our city beautiful!!
