Department of Development

West Lafayette is a great place not only to raise a family, retire and earn an education, but also to do business. The city has worked hard for several years to create a dynamic business-friendly environment by:

  • Partnering with Purdue University, Purdue Research Foundation and community economic development stakeholders
  • Proactively marketing West Lafayette
  • Creating a roadmap for progress via citizen-driven strategic planning since 1986
  • Investing in economic development through the use of tax increment finance (TIF) funds, grants and other available resources

The head of the Department of Development, Erik Carlson, oversees the city's strategic planning; economic and business development, retention and expansion programs, including administering tax abatements for the Economic Development Commission; and 3 TIF districts for the Redevelopment Commission.

The department also administers federal funds received from the Community Development Block Grant Program. These grants from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development stimulate economic growth by partially funding housing rehabilitation and programs to maintain and upgrade neighborhoods. They also allow the city to expand economic opportunities for low and moderate income people.
