Department of Development
Welcome to the West Lafayette Department of Development's web page! We hope you find this page informative.
West Lafayette is a great place not only to raise a family, retire and earn an education, but also to do business. The city has worked hard for several years to create a dynamic business-friendly environment by:
- Proactively marketing West Lafayette
- Creating a roadmap for progress via citizen-driven strategic planning since 1986
- Investing in economic development through the use of tax increment finance (TIF) funds, grants and other available resources
The head of the Department of Development, Chandler Poole, oversees the city's strategic planning; economic and business development, retention and expansion programs, including administering tax abatements for the Economic Development Commission; and 3 TIF districts for the Redevelopment Commission.
The department also administers federal funds received from the Community Development Block Grant Program. These grants from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development stimulate economic growth by partially funding housing rehabilitation and programs to maintain and upgrade neighborhoods. They also allow the city to expand economic opportunities for low and moderate income people.
Additionally, the Department of Development is responsible for the city's rental housing inspection program. To assure a safe and healthy living environment for all tenants, rental properties are inspected every 2 years for compliance with the city's Housing-Property Maintenance Code.
The Department of Development is currently located in Room 102 at the Morton Community Center and can be reached by telephone at 765-775-5160.
